The wooden rule is one of the most basic rules in being human. A lot of people chose to live by this–treating others exactly how they themselves have been treated. Jesus systematically dismantled this rule in his teaching in Matthew 5:43, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you..”
